    Recital and Evensong: In Honor of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Established in 2015, the first Evensong of the calendar year is presented in honor of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and in commemoration of the ongoing struggle for justice and civil rights in the United States and in the world at large. The recitalists for this event are chosen for their commitment to social justice causes and work in the community. This year, we are pleased to welcome the Unique Sounds of Love Chorus, led by director Joshua Sommerville. In 2009, Mr. Sommerville was selected as a choral conduct at the Kennedy Center’s commemoration Dr. King. Committed to spreading hope and peace through musical expression, the USOL Chorus will offer a prelude concert at 4:30, followed by the Service of Evensong led by the Choir of St. David’s, and including music by Tariq Al-Sabir, St. David’s 2015-2016 Composer in Residence, beginning at 5:00 pm. The evening of music is free and open to the public; a suggested donation of $15 ($10 students/retirees, no obligation children 12 and under) benefits the musicians and the music series. CD recordings of the USOL chorus will be available for purchase after the event.

    First Friday Concert: Trio Appassionata presents

        Passacaglia: Walking the Streets of Time

The February First Friday concert features Trio Appassionata, a piano trio comprised of graduates of the Peabody Conservatory. Acclaimed as “three of this generation’s most gifted artists,” the trio—Lydia Chernicoff, violin; Andrea Casarrubios, cello; Ronaldo Rolim, piano—has performed internationally at the National Center for the Performing Arts in Beijing, the London Festival of American Music, and at the Teatro Ateneo, Madrid, in addition to Carnegie Hall and other venues throughout the United States. The trio is also a recipient of the 2012 Presser Music Award, which funded the recording of their first CD and performances on the East and West Coast. The trio will explore the passacaglia form in the piano trio literature, presenting a program of works by Haydn, Shostakovich, Ravel, and a new work by Andrea Casarrubios written especially for this project. The concert is free and open to the public; a suggested donation of $15 ($10 students/retirees) benefits the musicians and the music series.

    Recital and Evensong: Phoon Yu, Organist

The February installment of the Recital and Evensong series at St. David’s begins at 4:30 and features Singapore native Phoon Yu, Organist. Currently completing his graduate study at the Peabody conservatory, Mr. Yu is also an accomplished composer and advocate for new music; his recital will include several new works written especially for him by Singapore-based composers, including Zhangyi Chen, a recent Doctoral recipient of Peabody. The Service of Evensong follows, led by the Choir of St. David’s, and including music of Francis Poulenc, Kenneth Leighton, and Bernard Rose.     First Friday Concert: Handel Choir of Baltimore

Handel Choir of Baltimore joins forces with the Choir of St. David’s for a special on March 3 at 7:30 pm. Directed by Arian Khaefi, this performance emphasizes the relationship that forms between local audiences, performers, and composers, resulting in a unique musical community defined and inspired by space and place. The concert features music by Marylanders Dale Trumbore, Natalie Draper, Darren Schmidt, and Douglas Buchanan, as well as works by William Averitt, Shawn Crouch, Eric Whitacre, and Paul Crabtree. This is a ticketed event; parishioners should contact Douglas Buchanan, director of music ministries; tickets may also be purchased at the door or at www.handelchoir.org.

    The 41^st Annual Baltimore Bach Marathon

An annual tradition since 1975, the Baltimore Bach Marathon offers a wealth of music by the great master from 2:00 to 7:00 pm on Sunday, March 19^th. Featuring local and regional artists and ensembles, the marathon is the perfect opportunity to hear a wide array of Bach’s prolific compositional life—from cantatas to instrumental works, organ soloists to chamber ensembles, the marathon has it all.     Music for Good Friday

The St. David’s Music Series continues on April 14 at 7:30 with a special musical offering entitled Music for Good Friday. This event weaves together text and music to create a reflective atmosphere at the crux of Holy Week, frequently including music that—due to its scope, difficulty, or mood—is rarely programmed in weekly services and liturgies. This year, the offering includes the mystical Tenebrae Responses by the infamous Renaissance Italian count, Carlo Gesualdo, presented by the Choir of St. David’s under the direction of Douglas Buchanan, Choirmaster and Organist.     First Friday Concert: The Argus Quartet
The Argus Quartet, St. David’s 2016-2017 Ensemble-in-Residence, returns to Baltimore to perform the closing concert of the First Friday series on May 5 at 7:30. This lively concert will include works classic works of the string quartet repertoire.     Recital and Evensong: Trio Sirènes

The final event of the St. David’s 2016-2017 music series begins at 4:30 pm on May 14, featuring Trio Sirènes: Marcia Kämper, flute; Karin Brown, viola; and Jacqueline Pollauf, harp. With performers drawn from the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, the trio enjoys pushing their own artistic boundaries towards artistic excellence and highlighting the diverse possibilities in combining the sounds of the wind, string, and percussion instruments. Their recital features Maurice Ravel’s Sonatine and J.S. Bach’s Prelude and Fugue in C Minor, BWV 871. The Service of Evensong follows at 5:00 pm, including music of Michael Rickelton, the 2016-2017 St. David’s Composer-in-Residence.
