The St. David's Music Series: 2016-2017 Season


It is our pleasure to invite you to the 2016-2017 musical season at St. David’s, a welcoming Episcopal community in the Roland Park neighborhood of Baltimore. During the first week of August, we will be announcing our offerings for the coming year. We invite you to check back frequently to see what lies in store!

    Recital and Evensong: Claire Galloway Weber, Mezzo-Soprano

Evensong Poster 1 2016-2017The 2016-2017 Music at St. David’s series opens with a festival Evensong and pre-service recital beginning at 4:30 pm on Sunday, September 18, featuring music and poetry composed in Baltimore. The pre-service recital includes mezzo-soprano Claire Galloway Weber performing God as she makes this earth, a collaboration of Baltimore artists Frances Pollock, composer, and Vanessa Moody, poet, offering a unique take on myths of creation and the creative process. The Service of Evensong, beginning at 5:00 pm, will include music written by 2016 -2017 Composer-in-Residence Michael Rickelton and a Baltimore premiere of a choral work by Icelandic composer Anna Thorvaldsdottir. This evening of music is free and open to the public; a suggested donation of $15 ($10 students/retirees, no obligation children 12 and under) benefits the musicians and the music series.

   First Friday Concert: The Argus String Quartet
Argus 3 PlayingThe first concert in the St. David’s 2016-2017 First Friday Series features this year’s Ensemble-in-Residence, the Argus String Quartet. Dedicated to reinvigorating the audience-performer relationship, Argus passionately engages in outreach programs within their own community and beyond. Their performances of standard repertoire are not only exceptional, but are paired insightfully with new and canonical works. Their artistry has been honored by appointment as the Fellowship Quartet in Residence at the Yale School of Music, and they have made appearances at Carnegie Hall, the Norfolk Chamber Music Series, and the Muziekgebow aan ‘t IJ in Amsterdam. Their debut performance in Baltimore includes works of Wu Man (Four Chinese Paintings), Christopher Theofanidis (Visions and Miracles), Robert Honstein (Arctic), and Garth Knox (Satellites). This concert is free and open to the public; a suggested donation of $15 ($10 students/retirees, no obligation for children 12 and under) benefits the musicians and the music series.


 

October 16, 2016 | 4:30 pm

    Recital and Evensong: Sungpil Kim, Piano

Evensong Poster 2 2016-2017The St. David’s Recital and Evensong series continues on October 16 with a pre-service recital featuring pianist Sungpil Kim. A doctoral candidate at the Peabody Conservatory, Mr. Kim has been praised by International Piano Magazine for performances infused with “magic in atmosphere, individuality, and poise,” and has appeared as soloist with the Moscow Symphony Orchestra, the Yamaha Rising Artist Series in Seoul, and at the Queen Elizabeth Competition. For this recital, Mr. Kim will present the first movement of Franz Schubert’s Piano Sonata No. 21 in B-flat Major, D. 960, as well as new works by Baltimore-based composers Christopher Ciampoli and Aaron Gage. The Service of Evensong follows at 5:00 pm, including works of Gabriel Fauré and Edward Bairstow. This evening of music is free and open to the public; a suggested donation of $15 ($10 students/retirees, no obligation children 12 and under) benefits the musicians and the music series.



November 4, 2016 | 7:30 pm

    First Friday Concert: The Music of Michael Hersch,

        featuring Lavena Johanson, ‘Cellist

4 - First Friday Poster 2 2016-2017 Alternate 4The First Friday series at St. David’s continues with a concert featuring the music of Michael Hersch, performed by ‘cellist Lavena Johanson. A graduate of the Peabody Conservatory, Ms. Johanson has performed with the Baltimore Symphony, and as a soloist with the Saratoga Orchestra and the Peabody Symphony; she is also only the second cellist to perform the demanding cello sonatas of Michael Hersch. Hailed by the Washington Post as a “natural musical genius who continues to surpass himself,” Hersch has been identified as “one of the most important composers of his generation” (The Philadelphia City Paper). In this unique concert, Lavena Johanson will offer both of Hersch’s sonatas for unaccompanied ‘cello, joined by the Baltimore-based chamber choir Canticum Novum, directed by Douglas Buchanan, in the world premiere of Hersch’s only choral work, From Ecclesiastes. The concert is free and open to the public; a suggested donation of $15 ($10 students/retirees) benefits the musicians and the music series.

    Recital and Evensong: Courtney Kalbacker, Soprano, and Jeffrey Gates, Bass

Evensong Poster 3 2016-2017The Recital and Evensong Series at St. David’s continues on November 13, featuring local opera artists Courtney Kalbacker, Soprano, and Jeffrey Gates, Baritone, in a vocal recital beginning at 4:30. The evening of music continues at 5:00 pm with the Service of Evensong, featuring the mystical St. Paul’s Evening Service by Herbert Howells and Franz Joseph Haydn sung by the Choir of St. David’s under the direction of Douglas Buchanan, choirmaster and organist. The entire event is free and open to the public; a suggested donation of $15 ($10 students/retirees, no obligation children 12 and under) benefits the musicians and the music series.

    First Friday Concert: The Canticle Singers of Baltimore

The Canticle Singers of Baltimore return to the St. David’s Music series in a concert of seasonal winter songs. Led by Artistic Director Wendy Wickham since 1997, the Canticle Singers are a Baltimore institution and Maryland’s premiere women’s chorus, offering concerts and musical events throughout the year, as well as scholarships for students. This concert also features the world premiere of a new carol by St. David’s Director of Music, Douglas Buchanan. Join in the holiday spirit and hear what the Canticle Singers have to offer! The concert is free and open to the public; a suggested donation of $15 ($10 students/retirees) benefits the musicians and the music series.

 
 
 
Lessons and Carols Poster 2016 Alternate REVISED

   A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols


Following in the tradition of Kings College Cambridge, the Choir of St. David’s leads the congregation of St. David’s in the annual Festival of Lessons and Carols. Including favorite hymns and songs of the Advent and Christmas season, this service also features the world premiere of a new work by 2016-2017 Composer-in-Residence, Michael Rickelton, as well as music offered by the Marquee Brass. Mr. Rickelton’s music has been performed by the Nashville Symphony, and Baltimore Symphony, the Baltimore Choral Arts Society, and the Washington National Cathedral Choir. This musical service is free and open to the public.

    Recital and Evensong: In Honor of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Evensong Poster 4 2016-2017Established in 2015, the first Evensong of the calendar year is presented in honor of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and in commemoration of the ongoing struggle for justice and civil rights in the United States and in the world at large. The recitalists for this event are chosen for their commitment to social justice causes and work in the community. This year, we are pleased to welcome the Unique Sounds of Love Chorus, led by director Joshua Sommerville. In 2009, Mr. Sommerville was selected as a choral conduct at the Kennedy Center’s commemoration Dr. King. Committed to spreading hope and peace through musical expression, the USOL Chorus will offer a prelude concert at 4:30, followed by the Service of Evensong led by the Choir of St. David’s, and including music by Tariq Al-Sabir, St. David’s 2015-2016 Composer in Residence, beginning at 5:00 pm. The evening of music is free and open to the public; a suggested donation of $15 ($10 students/retirees, no obligation children 12 and under) benefits the musicians and the music series. CD recordings of the USOL chorus will be available for purchase after the event.

    First Friday Concert: Trio Appassionata presents

        Passacaglia: Walking the Streets of Time

9 - First Friday Poster 4 2016-2017 REVISEDThe February First Friday concert features Trio Appassionata, a piano trio comprised of graduates of the Peabody Conservatory. Acclaimed as “three of this generation’s most gifted artists,” the trio—Lydia Chernicoff, violin; Andrea Casarrubios, cello; Ronaldo Rolim, piano—has performed internationally at the National Center for the Performing Arts in Beijing, the London Festival of American Music, and at the Teatro Ateneo, Madrid, in addition to Carnegie Hall and other venues throughout the United States. The trio is also a recipient of the 2012 Presser Music Award, which funded the recording of their first CD and performances on the East and West Coast. The trio will explore the passacaglia form in the piano trio literature, presenting a program of works by Haydn, Shostakovich, Ravel, and a new work by Andrea Casarrubios written especially for this project. The concert is free and open to the public; a suggested donation of $15 ($10 students/retirees) benefits the musicians and the music series.

    Recital and Evensong: Phoon Yu, Organist

Evensong Poster 5 2016-2017The February installment of the Recital and Evensong series at St. David’s begins at 4:30 and features Singapore native Phoon Yu, Organist. Currently completing his graduate study at the Peabody conservatory, Mr. Yu is also an accomplished composer and advocate for new music; his recital will include several new works written especially for him by Singapore-based composers, including Zhangyi Chen, a recent Doctoral recipient of Peabody. The Service of Evensong follows, led by the Choir of St. David’s, and including music of Francis Poulenc, Kenneth Leighton, and Bernard Rose. The evening of music is free and open to the public; a suggested donation of $15 ($10 students/retirees, no obligation children 12 and under) benefits the musicians and the music series.

    First Friday Concert: Handel Choir of Baltimore

CBA-EOS-6208 brighter cropped photo credit Christian AmonsonHandel Choir of Baltimore joins forces with the Choir of St. David’s for a special on March 3 at 7:30 pm. Directed by Arian Khaefi, this performance emphasizes the relationship that forms between local audiences, performers, and composers, resulting in a unique musical community defined and inspired by space and place. The concert features music by Marylanders Dale Trumbore, Natalie Draper, Darren Schmidt, and Douglas Buchanan, as well as works by William Averitt, Shawn Crouch, Eric Whitacre, and Paul Crabtree. This is a ticketed event; parishioners should contact Douglas Buchanan, director of music ministries; tickets may also be purchased at the door or at www.handelchoir.org.

    The 41st Annual Baltimore Bach Marathon

12 - Baltimore Bach Marathon Poster 2017


An annual tradition since 1975, the Baltimore Bach Marathon offers a wealth of music by the great master from 2:00 to 7:00 pm on Sunday, March 19th. Featuring local and regional artists and ensembles, the marathon is the perfect opportunity to hear a wide array of Bach’s prolific compositional life—from cantatas to instrumental works, organ soloists to chamber ensembles, the marathon has it all.     Music for Good Friday

The St. David’s Music Series continues on April 14 at 7:30 with a special musical offering entitled Music for Good Friday. This event weaves together text and music to create a reflective atmosphere at the crux of Holy Week, frequently including music that—due to its scope, difficulty, or mood—is rarely programmed in weekly services and liturgies. This year, the offering includes the mystical Tenebrae Responses by the infamous Renaissance Italian count, Carlo Gesualdo, presented by the Choir of St. David’s under the direction of Douglas Buchanan, Choirmaster and Organist. The evening of music is free and open to the public; a suggested donation of $15 ($10 students/retirees) benefits the musicians and the music series.

    First Friday Concert: The Argus Quartet
Argus 7 ACTIONThe Argus Quartet, St. David’s 2016-2017 Ensemble-in-Residence, returns to Baltimore to perform the closing concert of the First Friday series on May 5 at 7:30. Those who have heard their opening performance will know that this is a concert not to be missed—and if you haven’t heard them yet, here is the perfect opportunity! This lively concert will include works classic works of the string quartet repertoire. The concert is free and open to the public; a suggested donation of $15 ($10 students/retirees, no obligation children 12 and under) benefits the musicians and the music series.

    Recital and Evensong: Trio Sirènes

Evensong Poster 6 2016-2017The final event of the St. David’s 2016-2017 music series begins at 4:30 pm on May 14, featuring Trio Sirènes: Marcia Kämper, flute; Karin Brown, viola; and Jacqueline Pollauf, harp. With performers drawn from the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, the trio enjoys pushing their own artistic boundaries towards artistic excellence and highlighting the diverse possibilities in combining the sounds of the wind, string, and percussion instruments. Their recital features Maurice Ravel’s Sonatine and J.S. Bach’s Prelude and Fugue in C Minor, BWV 871. The Service of Evensong follows at 5:00 pm, including music of Michael Rickelton, the 2016-2017 St. David’s Composer-in-Residence. The evening of music is free and open to the public; a suggested donation of $15 ($10 students/retirees, no obligation children 12 and under) benefits the musicians and the music series.
