The Instruments of the Parish

IMG 8786The primary instrument in the church is an organ built in 1966 by the Canadian firm Casavant Frères. Cassavant organs are known for the rich colors balanced with tonal clarity, which serve to provide an exceptional range of timbres to enhance congregational worship, both in the singing of hymns and as a solo instrument heard in concert and during the organ voluntaries of the services. The instrument has 47 ranks of pipes, including an antiphonal Trompette en Chamade, playable over three manuals and pedal. For the curious, a stop list can be found below.

Hear Dr. Douglas Buchanan, Director of Music Ministries, performing an improvisation on Hildegard von Bingen's chant O ignis Spiritus paracliti at the innaugural Evensong for the Feast of Hildegard von Bingen, October 18, 2016.

photoThe church also possesses a beautiful chamber instrument of four stops (8', 4', 2 2/3', 2') built in 1986 by the Dutch builder Flentrop Orgelbouw, which is heard on occasion in the accompaniment of earlier repertoire in service or in concert.

A four-octave set of handbells and a 7' Baldwin grand piano are also used throughout the year in the sanctuary; the Music Wing of the church, the building of which was made possible by the generous donation of the Apgar family, also contains a baby grand and houses the parish's music library.

Hear the Choir of St. David's performing J.S. Bach's motet "Jesu, meine Freude," BWV 227, accompanied on the Flentrop organ at the 39th annual Baltimore Bach Marathon, below.
