In 2015-2016, we were pleased to welcome our innaugural Composer-in-Residence, Tariq Al-Sabir! Tariq is an endlessly creative musician, who began his musical study in the Peabody Prepatory program, and completed some of his first compositions in the Junior Bach Program at Peabody. In 2015 he moved to Manhattan to pursue studies at New York University, following the completion of a degree in Vocal Performance at the Peabody Conservatory. A passionate voice in the ongoing battle for civil rights in the U.S. and abroad, Tariq's commissioned work--a setting of the Preces and Responses, available here--was performed at the annual Evensong for the Feast of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., at which Tariq also performed a pre-service recital and the vocal solos for selections from Judah Adashi's civil right's cantata, Rise.
